Tour Stop: Valentine's Slay by Denise N. Wheatley

Hello everyone! Today, my longtime friend and fellow eXtasy Books author DENISE N. WHEATLEY drops by with her Valentine's Slay tour via Silver Dagger Book Tours. Enjoy!

* * * *

Valentine's Slay
by Denise N. Wheatley
Genre: Steamy Sci-fi/Fantasy Romance Novella

In the land of Zanalia, Valentine’s Day is a celebration of war. When two of the realm’s fiercest foes go head-to-head over the sacred ritual, sparks unexpectedly fly, igniting an explosion of love, lust, and ultimately, broken traditions.

In a world filled with warriors, Valentine’s Day means war for the creatures of Zanalia. Mina, queen of the disciplinarian tribe, is responsible for spearheading attacks on the land’s worst enemies.

Spike, the son of king Theo and Mina’s biggest adversary, no longer believes in provoking battles on this love-filled holiday. He secretly encourages the Zanalians to put away their weapons and spend time with their loved ones instead. The absurd suggestion goes against the territory’s oldest tradition and is rejected by many, to the point where Spike receives death threats. His father grows worried for his son and orders Mina to stage his kidnapping, then provide him with personal, around-the-clock protection.

Mina is infuriated by the mission as she’s being forced to protect a disloyal traitor. She vows to make Spike’s time with her as torturous as possible until she unwittingly finds pleasure in the pain she inflicts upon him, while he seemingly relishes in her harsh punishments. Emotions run high between the pair, and Mina realizes that Spike’s wish to spread love this Valentine’s Day just may come true after all.

Featured Book: Halloween Wars by Denise N. Wheatley

Hi everyone! Denise N. Wheatley is back with her latest release, a short story called HALLOWEEN WARS, which will be released by eXtasy Books on October 25, 2019, and it looks like it's going to be a fun read.

Halloween Wars

by Denise N. Wheatley

Genre: Sweet, Cozy Contemporary Romance

Hello, and thank you so much for having me! I don’t know about you and your readers, but this year I’ve welcomed Fall with open arms. The cooling air, changing colors, and upcoming holiday season have motivated me to begin celebrating early by writing a few festive novellas. First up is my sweet, cozy contemporary romance, HALLOWEEN WARS. This story was so much fun to write as it includes several elements that make for a good plot, including love, tightknit families, warm small-town vibes, and of course, plenty of drama. Read on to learn more about HALLOWEEN WARS and check out an exclusive excerpt!

Book Blurb:

In the small town of Hallowsville, all’s fair in love and war when frenemies Joy and Ava battle it out to win Halloween’s spookiest yard competition, along with the heart of the new guy in town.

Halloween is the most popular holiday of the year in small-town Hallowsville. While most are looking forward to the festivities, costumes, and treats, frenemies Joy and Ava are focused solely on winning the annual spookiest yard décor competition.

Joy has won the contest five years in a row, so she’s convinced her Zombieland graveyard theme will undoubtedly earn her first place yet again. Then word spreads that Ava-determined to ditch her never-ending second place status-has a spectacular plan up her sleeve that’s bound to secure the big trophy. This news throws Joy into a tizzy, and she creates a new outrageously gory concept that’s bound to turn heads and stomachs.

Tensions amongst the competing neighbors intensify when Kevin, a handsome divorcé, moves to town and joins the competition’s panel of judges. The stress to impress runs high between Joy and Ava as they do whatever it takes to win both the contest and Kevin’s heart.

Book Excerpt

When Joy heard her son PJ running down the stairs, a thrill of excitement shot through her. She was standing in the middle of the basement with her hands to her chest, eager to show off the final touches on her spooky display.

It was the afternoon of Halloween, and PJ had been outside setting up a tent in their front yard. The big reveal was set to take place at six o’clock, and Joy didn’t want anyone to catch a glimpse of her horrifying exhibit a minute sooner.

PJ entered the basement and gasped, stopping dead in his tracks when he saw the setup.

Joy didn’t quite know what to make of his reaction. “So,” she said, holding her arms out at her sides, “what do you think?”

“I uh…I don’t know what to say, Mom. Where do I even begin?”

Joy walked over to where PJ was standing and crossed her arms, analyzing what she’d deemed a gory yet artistic masterpiece.

“This looks like a scene straight out of an award-winning horror movie,” she told him, her tone filled with confidence. “There’s no way Ava will ever be able to top it. The judges may as well just hand the first-place trophy over to me now.”

She turned to PJ, who still hadn’t said a word, and nudged his arm playfully. “What's wrong? Black Halloween cat got your tongue?”

“It’s just…it’s just a bit much, don’t you think? This is a small town, wholesome Hallowsville. Our Halloween displays have never been this violent and gruesome. I mean, how are all the kids gonna feel when they see it, not to mention their parents?”

Joy moaned while walking over to one of her haunting mannequins and repositioning it. “The kids will be fine, and so will their parents. If you want to win, PJ, you have to take risks. I had to elevate my concept to the next level this year in order to secure the big trophy. You know Ava is trying her best to outdo me, and I can’t have that.”

“You’re determined to win the contest and Mister Thorton, huh?” PJ asked mischievously. “Poor Miss Jacobson.”

“Excuse me? What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Is that even a real question, Mom? Practically everybody in town knows you have a thing for Mister Thorton. And Miss Jacobson is really bad at hiding her crush on him. We all see the way she giggles and acts uber flirty whenever he’s around. I just don’t want this to blow up and turn into some big feud if you end up winning the contest and the new guy.”

Joy looked over at PJ and smirked. “Not if I win but when I win. And on that note, let’s start loading up these guys. It’s almost showtime.”

“Yep, let’s do it,” he replied apprehensively before carefully placing the frightening display pieces onto a dolly.

Excerpt

THE PRETENSE

Chapter One

Violet Christianson was a woman who knew what her name meant to most. Perfection. Everyone either wanted her, wanted to be her, or simply wanted her to go away.

Violet considered herself to be the most beautiful woman on her block, and never missed an opportunity to ponder her stunning image. At five-eight, she kept her lean, size two figure draped in outrageously expensive designer clothing at all times. Her dazzling, widespread hazel eyes were framed with long, lush lashes. Her retroussé nose had finally been perfected after several invasive surgeries. Her soft, plump lips accentuated high cheekbones when they puckered. Her raven hair swung so low that she could practically sit on it.

Violet’s husband, Elliot, was rich. The richest man on the block, to be exact. Elliot worked as a real estate developer and closed more big-money deals than a little bit. As a result, he allowed her to spend his money on whatever she wanted, and whenever she wanted. As he should have, considering how unsightly he was. Elliot’s pockmarked skin, hair plugs, bifocaled eyes, rat-like teeth, pot belly, and squat body were enough to send most into hysterics the moment they laid eyes on him. But Elliot was wise enough to hide his ghastly appearance behind his vast fortune. So by the time people noticed his looks, they’d already been so blinded by his Benjamins that his ugliness became a blur. Which is exactly how he said he wanted it.

Violet’s house was big. The biggest house on her suburban block, to be exact. It boasted a huge great room, six bedrooms, eight bathrooms, an Olympic-size pool, and even a room designated just for gift wrapping. The house had been designed by Jacques Lolique, interior decorator to the stars, which meant that her contemporary décor was nothing short of flawless—as was the house’s appearance, which was constantly being serviced by a small army of workers.

To top it all off, Violet was smart. Smart enough to have earned a doctorate in psychiatry. But rather than open a high-end practice and service the rich and famous, she’d gone with her heart and decided to work with inmates at the local state prison.
Violet Christianson. Beautiful, lucky, and charitable. All the reasons why most people either wanted her, wanted to be her, or simply wanted her to go away.

Chapter Two

Shayne Wentworth loved how the mere mention of her name brought smiles to most faces. She knew she may not have been the most beautiful woman on the block, but she certainly was the sweetest.

Shayne was an ex-pageant queen. Ex, simply because she now had five beautiful children and a wonderful husband to look after. If it weren’t for them, she could certainly still be competing. Because, after all, when she looked at herself, her bright-green eyes still danced. She made sure her straight white teeth still gleamed. And her creamy, clear skin still glowed. As for her shoulder-length platinum blonde locks, all she’d have to do was pull them out of the bun that she usually wore and shake it out a bit. As for her figure, all it would take was a crunch or two to get back in fighting shape. And as for the rest? Nothing a tube of lip gloss and a dazzling evening gown couldn’t fix. So, all things considered, she was still a contender.

Shayne’s husband may not have been the richest man on the block, but he certainly was the most powerful. Russell worked as a criminal defense attorney and had a reputation for being ruthless and cutthroat. At home, however, he was a different man. Russell was a gentle pussycat who worshipped his wife and doted on his children. He allowed Shayne to stay at home while he worked to provide for the family. Which was good for her, considering she knew nothing beyond the world of pageantry.

Shayne may not have had the biggest house on the block, but the one she did have was bursting with energy. Her sixteen-year-old son, Matthew, was following in his father’s star-studded footsteps by playing football at Russell’s high school alma mater. Her fourteen-year-old daughter, Sloane, was a straight-A student who’d managed to skip two grades and was taking accelerated courses in high school. Her twelve-year-old son, Ryan, already knew he wanted to be an attorney, so he spent every possible moment with his dad at the law firm. Eleven-year-old Cadence was carrying her mother’s torch by competing in statewide beauty pageants and winning numerous trophies and prizes. And Basil, Shayne’s ten-year-old son, was simply brilliant. His wit, intellect, and cunning sense of humor amazed all who knew him.

Shayne Wentworth. Nurturing, fortunate, and fulfilled. She may not have had the best on the block, but at least she had her family.

Chapter Three

Fifi Gentry knew that the mere mention of her name meant only one thing to most. Business. And while she may not have been the sweetest woman on the block, she certainly was the feistiest.

Fifi was a go-getter. A five-foot dynamo. A twenty-eight-year-old spitfire who was too busy fighting for the rights of others to worry about trivial things. Like looks, for instance. Fifi would much rather spend her time amending proposals than getting a makeover. She did, however, put forth an effort to appear presentable, considering she wanted to be taken seriously.

Fifi never missed her monthly hair appointments to have her sleek brown bob, which complemented her almond-shaped eyes, dyed and trimmed. She cleansed her flawless olive skin with plain water and smoothed Vaseline over it every night, which was her secret to keeping it radiant. She followed a strict macrobiotic diet and practiced Ashtanga yoga to help keep her enviable size zero in shape. And she did take the time to lengthen her lashes with mascara, brighten her cheeks with blush, and accentuate her lips with gloss every day.

Fifi may have been the only woman on the block without a husband, but her boyfriend certainly was the most influential man in the state. Senator Edward Hynes was Fifi’s current beau, and the buzz amongst politicians was that he’d be the one to beat during the next presidential election. And even though Fifi and Edward didn’t share many of the same political views, she couldn’t have been prouder of him.

Fifi’s house may not have been bursting with energy, but at least it was all hers. She still lived in the home she’d grown up in, which her parents had been kind enough to give to her. She hadn’t changed much by way of décor because she loved having the feel of her parents and memories of her childhood surrounding her. And the house would be perfect for raising a family in, which she was definitely looking forward to doing one day.

Fifi may not have the goods to compete in beauty pageants, but her advocacy work more than made up for that. Fifi worked as a lobbyist assistant, fighting to have bills passed that would enforce tougher child protection laws. She was currently lobbying to have convicted child molesters serve harsh, mandatory jail sentences, then once they were released, have electronic tracking devices implanted inside their bodies so their whereabouts could be traced at all times. More importantly, she was working to have a bill passed that would force child molesters to undergo physical castration.

Fifi Gentry. Purposeful, altruistic, and unrelenting. She may not have had the most on the block, but at least she had a mission.

THE TRUTH…

Early Reviews

“WARDS OF THE WOMEN uniquely explores the lives and misfortunes of three strong, distinctly-written female characters. The book is bold, the tone is inimitable, and the various twists and turns that occur throughout will be sure to captivate readers and keep them on the edge of their seats. The concept is compelling, outrageous and unusual, and just when you think that the characters have gone too far, they somehow manage to make a way out of no way and come out on top.”

“I love this story! It’s funny, sad and had me wondering what could go wrong next.”

“Loved this book! It was truly original and I could not put it down. Enjoyable and easy read.”

COVER REVEAL: Away to Me by V.J. Allison

This is it, everyone! The big day has finally arrived! I’m so excited to show off the cover for my new book, Away to Me, which is Book 1 in the Tri-Town Series. It will be published by eXtasy Books later this year, so keep watching for it!

Many thanks to eXtasy Books/Devine Destinies cover artist Martine Jardin for her amazing work on the perfect cover. It’s so Nova Scotian, which is exactly what I wanted. I adore it!

The town in the background is Lunenburg, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and home of one of the most famous schooners in Canada – The Bluenose II. The couple represents Neil and Kelsey perfectly… It’s amazing seeing them come to life for the first time. I’m so happy!

Before we do the big reveal, here’s some information about the book:

What would you do if you found out your late spouse wasn’t the biological parent of your stepchild as they had led you to believe? Would you let it go, in hopes the child wouldn’t go looking for their birth family, or would you help them in their search?

This is the dilemma Neil Falcon faced when he first discovered his late wife, Rita, wasn’t the biological mother of his teenage stepdaughter, Rikki.

His decision to look for her roots puts them on a path that leads them to a part of Neil’s past, one he thought was locked away forever.

Away to Me is about family, overcoming one’s troubled past, and finding that one special person to love forever.

Here it is, the gorgeous cover for Away to Me, Book 1 of the Tri-Town Series.

Away to Me
Book 1 of the Tri-Town Series

Tagline: Sometimes you have to go back to move forward…

“What doesn’t lie? The evidence.”

The evidence in front of Neil Falcon proved that his late wife wasn’t the birth mother of his stepdaughter, Rikki. If Rita lied to him about Rikki’s roots, what else did she hide from him?

The confused pair begin a search that leads them down a road that makes an unexpected backwards turn, to Neil’s past, and the woman who once held his heart.

Kelsey Wagner is shocked to see the man she once adored appear on her doorstep with claims that Rikki may be her biological child. After finding out her daughter wants her to be a part of her life, she agrees. With Neil’s help, Kelsey settles into the role of helping him raise their daughter.

Amidst the confusion of raising a teenage daughter and dealing with the antics of a mischievous corgi, the old feelings resurface.

They know their daughter wants them to become a family, but can they make it work?

Coming soon from eXtasy Books!
(Book 2 is currently “under production”, keep watching for updates on my blog!)

* * * *

I was interviewed by my longtime friend and fellow eXtasy Books author Maggie Blackbird. Enjoy!

1.   Hi, VJ.  It’s great to have you at my blog today.  We know each other through eXtasy Books and the Book Carousel, but can you tell the readers about the everyday VJ?

VJ: Hi Maggie, thanks for having me. All of you know I’m nuts about cats, heavy metal music, purple, and my family. I’m also a huge bookworm, and I can devour a good book in less than a day.

The everyday V.J. is a regular stay at home mom. I cook, I clean, I take care of my 15-year-old son who has autism, and I’m always tripping over our Maine Coon, Marnie. I’m really shy in real life, so I tend to hide at home a lot, and do most of my socializing with everyone online. My husband and I are close, we’ve been together almost 28 years, and will be married 18 years in November. I also love the beach, and pretty much grew up at Crescent Beach and Risser’s Beach, both are in Petite Riviere, NS.

I’m a trigeminal and occipital neuralgia warrior, I fight chronic pain daily. I’m an advocate for prevention of animal cruelty, including cosmetic procedures like ear cropping, debarking a dog, and declawing cats.

2.  You write romance.  What drew you to this genre?

VJ: I love the happy ever after aspect of it. I remember reading my first romance novel in Grade 6, and I was immediately hooked. I knew at that point I wanted to be an author, but I wasn’t sure what genre I wanted to write. That book sealed it for me.

3.  Your forthcoming book is Away to Me.  How did you come up with the idea for the book?

VJ: Oddly, it’s a spin off of a “what if?” scenario that hit me after I finished the first draft of a story that was sort of a sequel to the original version of Stricken. I wondered what would happen if an adopted child went looking for their birth families, and the consequences of it. Since I write romance, I added in another “what if” scenario – the surviving adoptive parent falling for the birth parent, and their love story.

4.  Since you write contemporary romance set in Canada’s Maritimes, what elements do you think this genre should contain? Did these elements influence Away to Me?

VJ: You have to show ordinary people living ordinary lives to some extent. Nova Scotia isn’t known for its rich and famous, so sticking with characters that people here can relate to is a necessity in my opinion. Another one would be including the ocean and our main industries – fisheries, tourism, carpentry, and all other spin-offs. Talk about the towns and describe them, that way the locals can picture the exact street in your mind, and everyone else can get a sense of what it’s like living in this part of Canada.

5.  Away to Me will release early this fall.  Can you share your writing process for this novel?

VJ: Goodness, it was one of the easiest stories I’ve ever written. I had just gotten a rejection for what is now Stricken from a publisher, and was writing what is now called “Play with Me” (novella that needs a lot of work!) when this idea hit me – it was early 2014. It wouldn’t leave me alone, and I set “Play with Me” aside to work on it. It came together so quickly – from Neil’s personality and his background, to the names, and finally, Kelsey’s reasons for giving Rikki up for adoption.

Once everything was set, I wrote it during the one or two days a week I am able to write (mostly Fridays during the school year when I’m home alone), with a few minutes of quick editing before I started writing. I have to be alone to write, because I get distracted so easily. I was sneaking in some work here and there when the guys were home but it was mostly editing and revisions.

This story and its characters were in my head, constantly, and I couldn’t write their story fast enough.

It came together in about 3 months, writing part time. That’s a record for me. *laughs*

Away to Me was supposed to be a practice story. I never thought I’d submit it to eXtasy Books and have it accepted!

6. Let’s talk about the main character. What do you love most about Neil Falcon and what makes you want to shake him?

VJ: Neil is the kind of guy that stands up for those he cares about, and is loyal to the death. He’s a big sweetheart with a heart of gold. He’ll take a bullet to save his daughter, or Kelsey. However, he has a stubborn streak a mile wide, and isn’t always as forthcoming with his feelings, wants, or needs as he should be.

7.  The same for Kelsey Wagner.  What do you love about her and what makes you want to shake her?

VJ: Kelsey is a tough woman. She’s opinionated, stubborn, and loves cats. She is also loyal until betrayed, then she becomes indifferent and cuts off the person for good. She has a lot of bravado, but has a fragile side. What drove me crazy about her was her unwillingness to see how much Neil loved her from the start, and how she couldn’t see she was a great mother to Rikki.

8.  Without giving away any spoilers, what was your favourite scene to write for Away to Me?

VJ: The last full love scene. It was a fun one to write.

9.  What makes Away to Me different from other contemporary romances?

VJ:
First of all, there are not many romance stories set in Nova Scotia. That alone makes it stand out. Neil and Kelsey are regular people, neither are rich or famous, and they are relatable to most readers.

10.  If a reader asked why they should read Away to Me, what would you tell them?

VJ: Kelsey and Neil are as real as you can get. There is some humor included, notably the dog’s antics, so it’s not a heavy duty read, there are a lot of lighter moments in it. It’s a story about love, growth, and letting go of one’s fears and past.

11.  What do you enjoy most about writing?

VJ: I love creating unique characters and sharing their journeys. Writing is therapy for me, it’s what keeps me sane when my various chronic illnesses flare up.

12.  What do you enjoy least about writing?

VJ: Editing and revising. Both are necessary evils in my opinion.

13.  I enjoy doing random questions, so humour me:

What’s your favourite movie?
Other than the original Star Wars Trilogy? Star Wars Rogue One, Valmont, Nightbreed, and The Fifth Element.

What book is currently in your e-reader?
I’m not reading much at the moment, but I have a lot of books by my fellow eXtasy Books and Devine Destinies authors in my TBR area of my Kindle app.

Who’s your favourite musical group?
Disturbed.

What song puts a smile on your face?
Stricken by Disturbed, Drift Away by Dobie Gray, and Cold Ethyl by Alice Cooper.

14.  Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I’m currently rewriting “Play with Me” (formerly “Something About Alexis”) and I hope to include that as part of the Tri-Town series. It’ll be easy to connect the two, even though there are no secondary characters in Away to Me I can exploit… However, I don’t talk about any of the secondary characters’ expanded families, so I’m able to get away with it, with some tweaking.

I hope to have this one finished sometime soon. I’m working on it during summer vacation, which is what’s supposed to be my break from actual writing… Normally I use summer vacation to catch up on reading! Next year. LOL

Thanks again for having me Maggie!
