Guest Post: An Unethical Practice (No Plain Jane PI Book 1) by Lee Collins and Jane Collman

Hello readers! Today, my dear friend LEE COLLINS and his co-author JANE COLLMAN drop by to talk about the amazing first book in their new "No Plain Jane PI" series, AN UNETHICAL PRACTICE. Please give them a warm welcome, and check out the book. It's a great read. I zoomed through it in less than 24 hours. They share the blurb, and an excerpt from this amazing book. I reviewed it on Amazon, and I'm sharing my glowing review for it.

But please, don't just take my word for it, go get it! It's available in Kindle, Print on Demand paperback, and it's even available on Kindle Unlimited (which I used).

Thanks for stopping by, Lee and Jane! All the best with the series, I can't wait to read Book 2 when it comes out.

AN UNETHICAL PRACTICE
By Lee Collins and Jane Collman

Blurb

Dr Julian Fitz-Bartholomew, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, goes to a bar after attending a Health Minister’s Forum to relax and put his long and draining day behind him. After talking to an attractive young lady with an alluring middle-class British accent, whose features gave him the impression she was of Eastern European descent, he regains consciousness on a beach close to his hotel late at night. When he takes a bath, he discovers a black line drawn along his breastbone, and a ruptured puncture wound in the crease of his arm. Given his medical background, he suspects he was drugged and something untoward was meant to happen to him. To prevent anybody else being subjected to his traumatic experience, and the press catching wind of what had happened, he turns to a private investigator, Jane. Working with her small team, Martine, and recruit, cocky wide-boy Grant, they race against time to find out who’s responsible for what happened to Julian—before whoever it is gets what they’re hunting for. And reporters have the opportunity to twist Julian’s innocent conversation with the vixen into a sex scandal, thereby potentially destroying his marriage and career.

About the authors

Lee was born and raised in London where he worked as a management consultant, but moved to Tenerife in the Canary Islands in 2001 to pursue a more fulfilling life and focus on his writing. He has been signed to the publisher, eXtasy Books, since 2016 and has sixteen books published with them (Lee and Jane have published An Unethical Practice independently). Jane is a retired police constable from the UK and has been actively involved in the last eight books Lee has published. Her input and first-hand knowledge of police procedures and the limitations of private investigators have been invaluable in making An Unethical Practice as credible and authentic as possible.

Excerpt (part of the dream scene)

I open the door. My nostrils fill with perfume-scented air laced with alcohol which lures me inside. I glance to my left and right—there are quite a few couples enjoying a romantic night together. A group of work colleagues are letting off steam after a hectic day. A few strays, like myself, sitting or on foot at the bar staring at everything and nothing.
Except one. The attractive young lady standing beside a stool wearing a hip hugging black satin skirt with a matching blouse, sheer enough to show off her satin camisole underneath. Everything accentuated her curves beautifully, and yet left a bit to the imagination. Her stiletto heels with thin shoestring laces, wound around her feet, up and above her ankles begged to be untied and unlaced slowly.
She doesn’t take her eyes off me, and I don’t know why. I glimpse behind me, but there’s nobody there—just me. She’s definitely staring at me, and my brow and palms become moist. I’m not sure if I’m flattered or shocked by her direct and unashamed eye contact. The other people in the bar, and the noise have faded into the background.
I head to the bar, not sure where to position myself along it. There are some gaps, but only one spare stool, and the mysterious lady has her Hermes handbag on it. I recognise it because Claudia has one and I remember how much it cost me.
Uncomfortable, I change direction. She acknowledges me, smiles, revealing immaculate white teeth, and takes her handbag off the stool. I walk towards her, nod and sit down. “Erm…that’s very kind of you to let me take your seat.”
She giggles. “Actually, it was my handbag’s seat, so she’s the one you should be thanking, not me.” Her middle-class British accent, and stunning facial profile and skin tone, which are suggestive of her Eastern European descent, are both charming and sexy. Her pupils are dilated.
I’m unable to sit still.
I chuckle. “Oh, I see. Forgive me, my mistake. Let me correct that right away.” I eye the handbag trying not to laugh. “Why, thank you, Ms. Hermes.” My cheeks burn slightly. I hope she appreciates, or at least tolerates, my pathetic attempt at humour.
She cocks her head to one side, eyes wide, lips pouting, and stares into my eyes. “Ooh, I’m impressed. Not many men can tell the difference between a Hermes handbag and what they sell at street markets, even if it’s swung at them with a brick inside it.”
We both laugh, me nervously, her confidently.
“Well, I’ve learned with time, it always pays to recognise a good handbag, if you want to keep on the right side of the ladies.”
“You’re quite the ladies’ man, are you?”
I shuffle uncomfortably on my stool, waving a finger. “Maybe once upon a time, but not anymore. Those days are over, I’m pleased to say.” I point to my wedding ring.
She flinches, her smoky vixen eyes aren’t sparkling so much. I sense disappointment. She averts her attention to my ring, takes my hand in hers, and raises it so she can inspect it. The view of her hair is replaced by her face and our gazes lock. “Aww. That’s so sweet. I’m really happy for you, and your wife. She’s a very lucky woman to have a handsome charismatic man like you. Do you have children?”
“Yes, we have two beautiful children—a girl and a boy.” I puff my chest out.
The sparkle in her eyes is back. “How lovely. Oh well, I’m quite young, so I’m sure I’ll have plenty of time for all that later in life.”
“Oh, I have no doubt in my mind you’ll find the right man when the times right for you. After all, you’re an extremely pretty and attractive young lady.” I tug on my jacket sleeve.
“Oh, stop it. You’ll have me blushing. And…” She pauses and taps a red polished nail against her glossy red lips—a mischievous glint in her eyes. “I’m not trying to pick you up. It’s just nice to have some good company. It’s not much fun being in a bar on your own. Especially when it seems like I’ve been stood up by a guy I was meant to be meeting. Anyway, changing the subject, and without wishing to sound rude… Are you going to order a drink for us both, or do I have to?”
I cover my face with my hand. She oozes confidence and has no problem taking control. “Oh my goodness. I didn’t think for one minute you were trying to…you know. Anyway…swiftly moving on. Of course, I’ll order us a drink. What would you like?”
She points at her empty Martini cocktail glass. “I’ll stick with the dry Martini’s, thank you.”
“Coming up. And, would Ms. Hermes like a drink?”
She giggles flirtatiously. My passionate senses ignite when she caresses my forearm.
“No, she’s driving, so she’d better not. My name’s Mila by the way. And you are?”
“Ah, I’m Julian.” I swivel my stool as she moves her hand away. I’m relieved, but surprisingly disappointed. I raise a finger in the air to attract one of the bartender’s attention.
“What can I get you, sir?”
“A dry Martini and a large scotch with ice, please.”
“Coming right up, sir.”
I glance to my left. Mila rests her chin in her hand as she leans against the bar. She studies me quizzically. “Do you work here, or are you just visiting?”
“I’m just visiting. I’m attending a conference and thank goodness it finishes tomorrow.” I’m momentarily reminded of Claudia, but Mila’s suggestive smirk has me mesmerised.
“Oh right. In which case you’re only going to be in town for tonight?”
I nod. “That’s right. As lovely as this place probably is, I can’t say I’ve really had the time to appreciate it, and I can’t wait to get back home.”
“Yes, I’m sure. It must be difficult being away from your family.”
“Harder than you can imagine.”
“Where are you staying?”
“The Royal Chesterfield. Do you know it?”
“Oh yes, I know it. It must be a very important conference if you’re staying there. It’s not cheap that place.”
“I wouldn’t know about that, but I guess it must be.” I shift awkwardly on my stool. “Anyway. I don’t really want to think about that place right now. That’s why I came here—to get a break from it.”
Mila grimaces. “I’m sorry. Let’s change the subject.”

VJ's Review:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book is amazing from start to finish. You kick off with Julian, a politician, who goes to a bar, feels sick and passes out... He wakes up on a beach not far from his hotel, unsure of how he got there. When he discovers two marks on him, he panics but is reasonable enough to call a Private Investigator. What happens next is a wild roller coaster, full of twists and turns that take you around several blocks before a high, explosive finale that leaves you wanting more.

Highly recommended. Five stars! I'm waiting anxiously for the next installment of this kick butt series.

Druid's Portal by Cindy Tomamichel - GUEST SPOT!

Good Morning book lovers! Today, I'm featuring Cindy Tomamichel, she's talking about her series, Druid's Portal. Show her tons of love please!

* * * *

What inspired you to write this book?
The same thing that inspires any author – the characters really won’t leave you alone. Apparently they decide when the story is finished, not me. Otherwise, lots of small bits of historical research is also inspiring. Janet the archaeologist working on Hadrian’s Wall for instance has a fascination with Roman sandals. Hundreds of sandals have been excavated at Vindolanda (a fort on Hadrian’s Wall) preserved in the mud. I found a reference to a incense burner at the site of a water goddess Coventina, and that got included in the story.
I was also keen to write a hero that is not one of the over forceful dominating types. Both Trajan and his son, Ethan are powerful capable men, yet both have a gentle side which they are not afraid to show.

What can we expect from you in the future?
The future involves finishing the Druid’s Portal series, which will be another three books. I have a book and e-course coming out for writers – The Organized Author. This is designed to help authors set up their author platform. Then there are all the scifi and fantasy novels I have on my hard drive to polish and get out into the world. So plenty to keep me and readers busy.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Druid’s Portal: The Second Journey?
The series focuses on the family of Janet and Trajan, who we meet in the first book. Janet is an archaeologist who is dragged back in time to Roman Britain and Hadrian’s Wall where she meets Trajan, a Roman soldier.

In the Second Journey, we follow their son, Ethan, who has inherited the duty of guardian of the time travel pendant, and has grown up in the shadow of heroic parents. One mistake creates an alternate history, and there Rowena battles a culture of war. But love is a chancy thing, and for a guardian, always comes with danger and death.

How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?
In the first one, I have always had a hankering to be an archaeologist, plus she needed to be fluent in latin. An interest in time travel, and a location and the story wrote itself.
For the Second Journey, I have noticed that growing up with parents that are already heroes themselves is a tough thing for the child. Think Indiana Jones, Luke Skywalker, Diehard series, and The Mummy series for instance. All tough, smart kids, but their parents have already done it all. What would be the consequences for a man growing up in the shadow of heroes? Will Ethan follow in his father’s footsteps, or forge his own path? Rowena also battles her heritage as a descendant of a man who warped her world into war.

Where did you come up with the names in the story?
Often names just come to me, but for secondary characters I consult a baby name book which also has info on the meaning and origin of the name. I can’t be christening ancient Celts with modern German names!

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
Tying all the threads together, and dropping hints of future events. This one starts to weave the threads of family and history that we glimpsed in the first one into what will become three generations of the family travelling into time.

Tell us about your main characters- what makes them tick?
Ethan has grown up in the shadow of heroic parents, and has trained his entire life to become both an historian, linguist and fighter. None of which he would have chosen to do himself, yet it is his duty and heritage.
Rowena has grown up in a world dominated by war, and will be training as a soldier. Her choices are narrowed to being a citizen or a slave. She can see no other paths open to her, except for her dreams and visions of Ethan.

Cindy Tomamichel is a multi-genre writer. Escape the everyday with time travel action adventure novels, scifi and fantasy stories or tranquil scenes for relaxation.
Find a world where the heroines don’t wait to be rescued, and the heroes earn that title the hard way.
The Druid’s Portal series is a genre blend of action, adventure, romance, time travel and magical historical fantasy set in Roman Britain.

The Knights of Camelot by Sarah Luddington - GUEST SPOT!

Good Morning book lovers! Today, Sarah Luddington drops by to talk about her series, The Knights of Camelot.

Don't forget the first book of the series, Lancelot and the King is FREE from June 29 to July 4th! You can get it HERE: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DH999SP

* * * *

What inspired you to write this book?

I found Lancelot as a character in a book that will never be published, because I can’t write it well enough, and knew he needed a story of his own. So began my research into Arthurian mythology. What a rabbit hole that turned out to be!

When I studied the original texts I began to see a pattern. Arthur forgives Lancelot, but never Guinevere and her punishment is far worse than Lancelot’s for their affair. Why would a king forgive a knight for bedding his queen? Maybe the king loves the knight far more than the queen and maybe the knight bedded the queen to somehow reach out to the king…? That was the question I asked myself when I began Lancelot and the King, the first in the Knights of Camelot series. It took a lot of words to figure out the answer.

What can we expect from you in the future?

More stories where I turn icons of history and contemporary literature into heroes for the LGBTQ+ community. We deserve heroes and if I have to write them, then I will! These iconic characters, ones that have shaped our understanding of what it means to be heroic and honourable, should also be gay or trans or queer. Why can’t King Arthur or Robin Hood be gay? Does it make them weak? Or less able? Of course not, so that’s why I write these stories.

Do you have any “side stories” about the characters?

Loads…

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Lancelot and the King?

The Knights of Camelot. You know the iconic characters I write about. What I’ve tried to do is inject them with the frailties of a real person, while maintaining their essential heroic motifs and the deep magic in the original stories that acted as metaphors for the medieval world view.

Lancelot’s mind breaks under the pressures Arthur, his king, places on him. The dead haunt him. His love for Arthur destroys him and he tries to walk away but fails, so has to find the strength to return and make Arthur really ‘see’ who he is and what he needs. Meanwhile he has to save Camelot from powerful enemies of the supernatural kind and battle gods to prevent England and Albion from being destroyed.

King Arthur was, in many ways, more difficult because I had to learn about him from Lancelot’s point of view. He’s strong, born to be a leader, but doesn’t want the mantel thrust upon him by his birth. It makes him petulant and selfish, especially over the object of his affection. If Arthur can’t have Lancelot, then no one can! As he grows older and sees the damage his selfishness causes to others, Arthur changes, probably the most out of all the characters. He learns that love comes with heavy responsibilities and he shouldn’t always expect to win just because he is a king. He learns about self-sacrifice and in that finds the true meaning of honour. He’s a complex character in the original myths and that doesn’t change in my stories.

Tell us about your main characters- what makes them tick?

I’ll talk about Lancelot but I could go on forever about the rest of them. His service to his king and country dominate every waking thought for Lancelot. Every decision he makes, every move, he is a soldier first and a man second. His warrior code is scored on his bones but his mind and heart are still fragile and his soul cries out for peace, for hearth and home. For a family. He can and does kill without conscience but he always tries to kill the right person and save the weak or vulnerable.

If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

Easy one – Aidan Turner of Poldark fame. When I saw him in the BBC version of Begin Human he became my Lancelot.

What is your favorite part of this book and why?

In every book my favourite bits are killing the bad guys. Damn, I love it when Lancelot pushes his sword into some bastard and they die knowing he’s taken their life. And the slightly less psychotic answer… When he shares his heart with Arthur or Tancred. When they have those soft moments among the war and mayhem that makes them men, not machines of death. I love exploring the tenderness such a man is able to share with someone he trusts.

If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

I spent every day of ten years with Lancelot and miss him all the time but his story is done. If I could walk into a room with him I’d coax him outside, ask him to teach me more about fighting and ride off into the sunset to find adventure at his side as his equal.

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reins of the story? Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.

This one made me laugh… I wish I had some measure of control over them. I come up with the general outline of the book, but they write it. They often surprise me and when someone dies, it’s difficult writing through the tears.

Why should you read these stories? They are full of the ancient mysteries of a time lost in myth and magic. They have romance and adventure at their core and characters are so complex they fill your mind with passionate – What Ifs? These are stories to be told by firelight or while watching the stars turn overhead on a summer’s evening. They speak to the heart of love and how it can change entire worlds if one person is strong enough to make a stand.

When I first starting writing these stories gay marriage didn’t exist, that’s how much each voice can change a world.

Is there a writer whose brain you would love to pick for advice? Who would that be and why?

I can’t answer this one easily though I wish I could. I love talking to writers. Euripides and Aeschylus would be first because their Greek tragedies filled my imagination with wonder as a child and when I studied them at collage. Makes me sound really posh but damn these guys could tell a story!

Jane Austen because she fascinates me. The depth of her understanding of society and a person’s mind is deep. Also, how she survived her own, very controlled, life for so long.

Men like Chris Ryan and Andy McNab – who to go from serving in the SAS to writing about it and living in a domestic world. It must be the most difficult transition we ask of our service men and women who become elite warriors.
